Mosquitoes are never on the guest list, but as a Floridian, you know firsthand that these insects show up whenever they want. When you're trying to enjoy some time on your patio or deck, mosquitoes can make the experience unbearable, but there are steps you can take to correct this issue.

Learn how to keep mosquitoes away so that you can comfortably enjoy the outdoor spaces of your home.

Remove Stagnant Water

Mosquitoes love stagnant water because it creates the perfect environment for laying their eggs. If you overwater your lawn, the soil will over-saturate and become soggy and swampy, which is just the environment these insects are looking for.

Because this creates such an enticing environment, even if you're using other repellent methods, it will be a challenge to keep mosquitoes away. Do some research to determine the right irrigation level for your lawn and make any necessary adjustments.

Also, regularly empty any child pools, large open containers such as recycling bins, or any other structure in which water may pool and collect. Mosquito larvae cannot survive without water, so cutting off the water supply will make a big difference in the number of insects you see around your home.

Garden With a Purpose

Create a small garden that is attractive and also useful. Carve out a little area near your patio or deck and plant rosemary and garlic. Mosquitoes and other insects find the smell of these herbs repulsive, and the smell naturally makes them stay away. These growths are just as effective when planted inside of a dish or pot.

If you're unable to plant these herbs in your yard, find a natural extract spray that you can mist around your outdoor spaces when you plan to spend time outside.

If you're looking for plants that are more attractive and can add to your landscaping design but are still effective at keeping mosquitoes away, you could also plant marigolds or lemongrass.

Clean the Swimming Pool

Living in Florida and having a swimming pool often go hand in hand. If you have a pool in your yard, ensure you keep it clean. Mosquitoes love any source of water, but they prefer dirty and stagnant water. Keep the water cleaner to make the pool less attractive to these insects.

Whenever you're not actively using the pool, it should be covered, so invest in a durable cover that can keep insects out. You should also install a timer-based filter that cycles at regular intervals, such as every 4 hours. Lastly, stay on a regimented disinfecting cycle, as it's harder for mosquito larvae to grow in well-balanced water than dirty water.

Mow the Lawn

Just like other insects, mosquitoes need some level of cover to rest and recoup. Tall grass provides the ideal environment for these activities. Keep your grass cut to keep mosquitoes away. Tall grass will not only make it harder to get rid of the existing mosquitoes around your home but also attract more of these insects to your yard.

If your schedule doesn't leave much time for lawn care, consider a low-grow grass like centipede grass. Since it does not grow very tall, you won't have to worry about swarms of mosquitoes flooding your lawn if you're unable to cut the grass regularly.

These bugs are also attracted to weeds. No matter how tall or short your grass is, ensure you add weed control to your lawn care regimen.
